At A Better Chance, a specialized school in Richmond, California, I was curious about the inner life of children with autism. I made images of kids between six and 22 years old who grappled with basic communication and social skills, as well as with more remedial tasks such as eating and using the bathroom. The children I photographed were trapped inside their own worlds. Their hard work with teachers and caregivers was to learn to find ways to connect to the outside.
